CULTURAL JUSTIFICATION.

We would say culture is the way of life of a group of people living in the same geographical region and even  with this definition, we still have periodical conflicts on what is culturally acceptable and what is not.
Cultural acceptance on different topics  has brought up many disputes on what should be modified and what should be annihilated out of the culture because of the changes in time and interest of our people.

The leading topic of concern is our dressing. We say nudity is not in our culture but when we trace back the dressing pattern of our ancestors of the past ,we realise most of them especially women wore little or no clothes at all. Why then do we still fight scantily dressed ladies amongst us? Why do we lambaste what they wear and see it as inappropriate? Why do we punish those who are close to us because of the way they dress? The only answer that is clear is that time has changed and everything we do has received its share of sexualism in it. We don't dress again to cover our nudity or protect our body from temperature changes but some of us do it for sexual attention and to be seen as creative fashionistas. This is a situation where the purpose of clothes lose its value. Why wear a sleeveless blouse and miniskirt just to impress people around you when you are cold?
We obviously have a right to express ourselves freely as far as it does no damage to another person's life or property but I will continue to stress that the ability to decide what is right and what is wrong is what defines us as a human being/higher animal.
We say time has changed but have we changed? Do we really need to change everything and abandon all we have learnt just to float on this wave of  time? The answer is "NO" and "YES" .  we should be able to sit down and assess the purpose of this cultural values we hold on to and honestly determine if it is an element of social equilibrium of peace we need.
You can dress the way that suits you but remember that times have changed from when everyone do things with modesty to when people seek attention even at the expense of their lives. We should not dress to emulate people. We should dress to protect our body from environmental hazards as well as look beautiful but not forgetting that nudity is not equivalent to beauty.
Even as we follow the trend of change, let's not forget who we trully are  and dress to be comfortable and in a way we would feel no sense of inferiority because everyone is a unique being and our diversity in culture is what brings about differences in dressing and expression.
Music is another issue of great concern as the older generation will often challenge the younger generation's choice in music genre. All I can decode from this music genre change is the fact that music composition is usually  from incidents around us, our beliefs, values and our thoughts about things. With the way the world is evolving so fast, the discovery of technology and changes in in learning methods, and frequent cultural comparisons, our interest has  changed over the years and with each generation that we have because everyday we discover new things and try them out.
Whether we admit it or not, when we listen to music of the older generation, we tend to like them for the lyrics and originality and some of the older generation may find interest in current genre of songs of the present generation.
We could continue to bring on new topics on the cause of cultural disputes and dissatisfaction and it would never end because the trail leads to one similar cause that is "time changes" and we learn new things that we adopt in our lives daily.
We are eager to embrace the concept of change that we forget that we still need a guide to check our human excesses & that is why we have laws and norms being established to curb some occasional destructive choices/actions we make.
Cultural belief could have its flaws based on misconceptions like killing of twins in old times because it was believed that they brought evil to the people but with human interference (Mary Slessor), it was discovered that twins had no connection to bad occurrences to people but culture has helped us discover our true identity as an individual.
We need to embrace our culture, be ready to modify some of our cultural practice's that has minute significance to our development and be prepared to eliminate those practice's that only pose a threat to our lives in general.
Culture is after all an element of our identity and its diversity is what makes the world an interesting place. Let's not forget to promote it and be ready to learn better ways of life that would benefit our existence.

  1. Culture is both a static and dynamic concept..Also what is at play here is americanization of our thought process hence we imbibe other people culture

  2. that is correct that is why we have to think before acting and stop emulating what would not favor our development
