Everyone is struggling with their "inner self" on things, situations and attitude they want to change to become better but it is the timing and commitment to these resolutions that determines the outcome.
Do we really need to wait till we face a tragic situation before we make up our mind to change our lifestyle and attitude? Do we have to wait till our birthdays or a new year before deciding on changes we need to make about ourselves? Do we really work towards achieving this resolutions we make? The answer is YES and NO depending on who we are.
We view a new year and our birthdays as a landmark to measure achievements, success, failure and set goals for future plans which is a good thing but we don't have to wait till our birthdays or a new year before setting goals for ourselves.
We should try to set short term goals also on what we want to change about ourselves & want to achieve and the new year/our birthdays can be a long term time frame to evaluate our output & achievements of the year. This short term goals can be of 2months duration, after which we will evaluate ourselves sincerely or seek opinion of unbiased/trusted people who will tell us areas that we have excelled in and areas we would still need to work on.
We usually experience failure in our long term or short term resolutions because of weak inner motivation/commitment to our goals. We should not resolve to make changes or achieve something just because everyone is telling us about theirs but we should make this resolutions because we have thoroughly analysed our previous attitude, achievements & success and realised that the action we are about to involve ourselves in is an important factor to help us become a better person.
External motivation like gifts, praises and recognition can be a "good driving force" we need to keep us going in achieving our dreams, but its results will never be as rewarding as someone whose driving force is an internal motivation to achieve that goal as a composition of their success story.
External and internal motivation are interwoven and we need to apply both of them in our daily lives to achieve maximum success. Even when we decide to achieve our goals or stop a bad habit without anyone asking us to do it, we would still need supportive friends & families to repeatedly remind us to focus when we occasionally get distracted. This makes our internal motivation(self determination) depend on the external.
Both types of motivation must be balanced in proportion to keep us going because a surge in one of them and a deficit in the other can gradually weaken our commitment towards our set goals to achieve.
Before joining the trend of announcing your resolutions/goals, you should have reached an inner agreement with yourself to work towards the goal and balance your motivation from both sources to spur you on.
Always remember that no time of the year and season is too late to set new goals for yourself to achieve and it is the commitment to it that determines the outcome and the only way to achieve a splendid result is to conduct periodic review of ourselves before the long term time frame we have as our target and above all let your inner motivation & interest match what you stand to gain from your actions/goals.
